The above photo shows the LB&SCR locomotive, No. 44, B4 Class. It was designed by Robert Billinton and built at Brighton Works for the London Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR). From 1902-1911 it was named after “CECIL RHODES". It was incorporated into the Southern Railway in June 1923 and numbered SR.B44, later re-numbered SR.2044. (It did not carry the name “CECIL RHODES” forward). It was withdrawn from service in September 1948, never becoming a British Railways Locomotive. |
